Agriculture is facing a real crisis because
of public policies that have created demand
for natural gas while at the same time has
restricted access to supply sources. The
National Corn Growers Association encourages
every corn grower to write his or her
Members of Congress asking for legislation
that will encourage increased domestic
production of natural gas.
U.S. agriculture depends on natural gas
for many very basic items in the food
chain. The farm sector depends on
significant use of natural gas for
irrigation, crop drying, heating farm
buildings and homes, crop protection
chemicals, and nitrogen fertilizer
production. Nitrogen fertilizer is a key
input for the bountiful yields achieved by
U.S. farmers.
We encourage Congress to explore policies
that would increase the development of
domestic energy resources, such as opening
the Artic National Wildlife Reserve (ANWR)
and the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) for
exploration and production.
Agriculture is the basis for the reliable
food, fiber, feed and now energy for the
U.S. and many others around the world. U.S.
farmers produce a safe and abundant food
supply for the entire world.
Congress must develop good public policy to
use much needed domestically produced
resources.
