Mission

It would be madness and inconsistency to suppose
that things which have never yet been performed
can be performed without employing some
hitherto untried means, F. Bacon, 1620

Earth is our beautiful home. The understanding of how the Earth works and what the humans do to Her is not a mere intellectual endeavor; it is essential to preserving our good lives, and improving the desperate lives of so many people elsewhere. Earth sciences seek to construe the order of earth systems; they inspire studies of all aspects of life. Mathematics provides the richest language in which we, earth scientists, discuss the Earth. Often we need help to translate our observations into this language. Mathematicians delight in providing the translation, and they delight in it because it is beautiful too.

Berkeley Center for Advanced Study of the Earth (B-CASE) is a joint venture between the Colleges of Engineering and Letters&Sciences, at the University of California at Berkeley, to promote interdisciplinary research. The Center relies on the unique combination of world class science and research facilities in Berkeley, which has a long and distinguished tradition in engineering and science. B-CASE allows many of the best scientists around to work together, driven by common interest and passion.

B-CASE brings together the scientists and engineers who study the diverse parts of our planet. Some study the subsurface, others the atmosphere, the land, or the oceans. Advanced mathematics provides the common language which binds all of these studies together. Advanced computer science provides the practical implementation tools. Our center promotes the formation of diverse scientific communities. Our goal is to attract not only the best researchers and students in Berkeley, but also in the U.S., and the rest of the world.

Education is an integral part of our Center. We offer an integrated rigorous program of study to Master and Ph.D. students. We seek to popularize earth sciences and mathematics in the society at large and to explain the often difficult and painful choices the society must make to keep us and our planet healthy.

To fulfill its mission, B-CASE seeks funding from private sources and government agencies.
